WEA’s online course for digital skill development achieved outstanding engagement compared to typical MOOCs
Challenge
Workers’ Educational Association WEA Finland (Työväen Sivistysliitto) needed an engaging, accessible online course to help working-age individuals improve their digital skills and confidence, opening new career opportunities.
Solution
By leveraging Howspace’s interactive platform, WEA created a self-paced, 10-module online course with personalized learning plans and structured content to foster engagement and social learning.
Results
Creating an engaging and accessible learning experience
The Workers’ Educational Association (WEA Finland) set out to create an online course designed for all working-age individuals, focusing on continuous learning and career development.
As part of the “Digital Skills in Working Life as Continuous Learning” project, the course aimed to enhance participants’ basic digital skills, boost their confidence, and open new career opportunities.
To achieve these goals, WEA needed a learning platform that would facilitate engagement, social learning, and personalized guidance while ensuring a structured and flexible learning experience. Howspace was chosen for its ability to create an interactive and engaging environment for learners.
A structured yet personalized learning experience
WEA collaborated with Howspace to develop a fully online, self-paced course covering essential digital skills for the modern workplace.
The course included ten modules and personalized learning plan discussions (HOKS) to help learners assess and develop their skills.
By leveraging Howspace’s interactive features, WEA was able to design a visually engaging and user-friendly learning experience. The platform enabled:
- Clear content structuring for easy navigation
- Personalized learning journeys through individual discussions
- A flexible, inclusive environment that encouraged active participation
- Visual and linguistic elements to make the learning experience more approachable
WEA’s facilitators, Pinja Kuusenaho and Janne Laulumaa, worked closely with Howspace’s design and implementation team to ensure the course was not only informative but also engaging and accessible.
Outstanding engagement rates compared to typical MOOCs
The collaboration between WEA and Howspace produced exceptional results, surpassing typical online course engagement rates:
- High participation and completion rates: The course initially targeted 100 participants but attracted 270 registrations. Out of these, 178 took part in individual discussions, and the course’s average module completion rate was 74%—far exceeding the 13% average for MOOCs.
- Increased confidence and career opportunities: Surveys showed that participants gained greater confidence in their digital skills. Many reported feeling encouraged to apply for new jobs or pursue further studies, including university-level programs.
- Sustained learning impact: Participants expressed that the course helped them set realistic learning goals and provided them with resources for continuous skill development.
- Stronger social learning experiences: Seeing peers’ responses and progress enriched participants’ individual learning experiences and broadened their perspectives.
Positive feedback on the Howspace platform: Learners appreciated Howspace’s intuitive interface, visual enhancements, and interactive elements, such as videos and AI-driven insights, which made learning more dynamic and engaging.
Future plans and continued learning
Following the success of this project, WEA plans to make the course materials available as open educational resources and integrate Howspace into future training programs. The organization remains committed to supporting lifelong learning and skill development for working-age individuals.
About the project
The course was funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) under the Next Generation EU initiative. The funding was granted by the Service Centre for Continuous Learning and Employment (Jotpa), which supports the development of workforce skills in Finland.
