WEA’s online course for digital skill development achieved outstanding engagement compared to typical MOOCs 

Creating an engaging and accessible learning experience

The Workers’ Educational Association (WEA Finland) set out to create an online course designed for all working-age individuals, focusing on continuous learning and career development. 

As part of the “Digital Skills in Working Life as Continuous Learning” project, the course aimed to enhance participants’ basic digital skills, boost their confidence, and open new career opportunities.

To achieve these goals, WEA needed a learning platform that would facilitate engagement, social learning, and personalized guidance while ensuring a structured and flexible learning experience. Howspace was chosen for its ability to create an interactive and engaging environment for learners.

A structured yet personalized learning experience

WEA collaborated with Howspace to develop a fully online, self-paced course covering essential digital skills for the modern workplace. 

The course included ten modules and personalized learning plan discussions (HOKS) to help learners assess and develop their skills.

By leveraging Howspace’s interactive features, WEA was able to design a visually engaging and user-friendly learning experience. The platform enabled:

WEA’s facilitators, Pinja Kuusenaho and Janne Laulumaa, worked closely with Howspace’s design and implementation team to ensure the course was not only informative but also engaging and accessible.

Outstanding engagement rates compared to typical MOOCs

The collaboration between WEA and Howspace produced exceptional results, surpassing typical online course engagement rates:

Positive feedback on the Howspace platform: Learners appreciated Howspace’s intuitive interface, visual enhancements, and interactive elements, such as videos and AI-driven insights, which made learning more dynamic and engaging.

Future plans and continued learning

Following the success of this project, WEA plans to make the course materials available as open educational resources and integrate Howspace into future training programs. The organization remains committed to supporting lifelong learning and skill development for working-age individuals.


About the project
The course was funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) under the Next Generation EU initiative. The funding was granted by the Service Centre for Continuous Learning and Employment (Jotpa), which supports the development of workforce skills in Finland.
